The Portage Northern Forensic team capped off a perfect season when they took the first place sweepstakes trophy at the spring Michigan Speech Coaches, Inc. tournament held at the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island on Saturday, May 22nd.  This is the 13th consecutive first place finish at this annual Mackinac tournament for Northern. First place finishers include: Megan Miles and Nathan Novaria in Duet Acting, Riley Coon in Prose Interpretation, and the Mini-Multiple, “Hercules” featuring Alex Billedeaux, Mary Fletcher, Derek Krinock, Katie Noyes, and Nat Zegree.

Seniors… remember that tomorrow is Senior Breakfast!  A delicious hot breakfast will be served at 7 am in the cafeteria.  After breakfast, Senior Star Awards will be handed out and you will receive your senior envelopes with graduation tickets.

Attention Seniors! At the Senior Breakfast tomorrow morning, the Social Studies Department will have a voter registration table set up to get you registered to vote. Make sure you have your Driver’s License with you and we will help you make the rite of passage in becoming a registered voter!!! See you in the morning!!

The A&F $1,000 Scholarships are available to all high school juniors and seniors. To apply for this scholarship you will need to write an essay on the topic • What do you see as the long term impact of our current recession on the average family? How might it affect their future decisions? The essay should be between 500 and 1000 words. Your submissions must be sent by email at: scholarships@abbottandfenner.com Deadline is June 19, 2010.

The 10th annual Grass Roots Garden Arts & Plant Sale will be held on Saturday, May 29 (8am-6pm) and Sunday, May 30 (10am-2pm) 2010, rain or shine!  Volunteers are greatly needed starting Wednesday, May 26 through Friday, May 28 (checkout is 5-5:30 pm). A required volunteer form is available in the counseling office.  Please "check box" the times/dates/positions that you would like to volunteer. Also note that volunteers helping during “sale times” will need to attend the Volunteer Training held on Friday, May 28 from 5:30-6pm.   Questions about this event should be directed to Ashlee Brennan at 345-8950.

For all those current NHS members that responded “yes” to the pizza party, we will meet Wednesday, May 26 outside the cafeteria at 3:00 pm.  We’ll eat, relax and hang out until about 4 or 4:30.  If you have not yet responded and would like to attend, please email DiMaggio or Friedman.

Seniors -  If you have outstanding consequences (detentions or 250’s), fines, or other missing work, you will not be allowed to sign out.  Please take care of your necessary business as soon as possible.

ATHLETICS

Come out tonight and support the girl’s soccer team as they will host Battle Creek Lakeview in the SMAC Tournament Semifinals.  It will also be Senior Night as well.  JV starts at 5pm, with varsity following at 6:45pm.

In Track News - Despite the thunderstorm delay and a two day track meet, the Huskies had a great showing at Regional’s. Athletes qualifying for the state meet are: Kayla Morin (pronounced Maureen), Kayla Tillman, Aaron Dewberry, Javonte Lipsey, Matt Hoff, Cedric Jones, Ben Hutchins, Chris Laneaux, Dennis Kesolitz, Luke Rabe and Jacorey Lipsey. The State meet is June 5th at Rockford High school. This Wednesday, the team is going for their 4th straight SMAC Conference Championship. Good luck Huskies!
