Lake Center Elementary School serves 585 students from Kindergarten through fifth grade. The building not only houses the regular education program for students, but also a special education program caring for the needs of students. The educational needs of the students at Lake Center Elementary are cared for by a total of 54 full and part time faculty and staff. The 34 teachers actually comprise the total full-time equivalency of 26.7 teachers. Lake Center students are also served by a reading consultant, media consultant, guidance counselor, part-time paraprofessionals, and two special education teachers.
Our At Risk program assesses students against model content standards in basic academic skill areas. Parent involvement and education are part of this program. All these services are available to students to meet their individual needs and to assure that their participation in the instructional program is maximized.
The core curriculum at Lake Center provides learning experiences in language arts, mathematics, social studies, science, health, arts education, physical education, and technology. The K-12 curricular and instructional programs for the Portage Public Schools are developed on a district-wide basis by K-12 Curriculum Development Teams and are implemented and sequenced within the building to endure both the horizontal and vertical cross-district alignment of curriculum and instruction.
The Houghton Mifflin Legacy of Literacy basal series along with children’s literature and non-fiction comprise our reading program. Phonics lessons are also part of the reading program in grades K-2. We continue to implement a "hands on" science program at Lake Center Elementary to more directly address the needs of our children in the areas of science education.
Our Scott Foresman/Addison Wesley math curriculum is aligned with the National Teachers of Mathematics Standards. Teachers use a variety of instructional techniques such as: thematic-integrated instruction, cooperative learning and process writing in order to provide our students with an exemplary educational program.
