Board of Education Election Results

Four candidates ran for two four-year seats on the Board of Education in the May 6 election, with Board Vice President Jennifer Whistler being re-elected and Russell "Rusty" Rathburn winning a seat on the Board.

Former Board president and current Trustee Tom Eddy is retiring from the Board after 12 years of service.

Schedule of Meetings

The Board is following an improved sequence for meetings to allow for extended work sessions by trustees, which began at the start of the 2007-2008 year. The Board meets in the Professional Development Center conference room for work sessions and on alternate dates, conducts business meetings in the Community Room. Both meetings are open to the public and are conducted in the Administration Building on 8111 S. Westnedge (and business meetings are televised live on Portage Cable Channel 20 and repeated that Thursday at 7 p.m.).

Trustees and the year their term concludes: Shirley Johnson ('09), Jennifer Whistler ('08), Tom Eddy ('08), Melanie Kurdys ('11), Wendy Mazer ('10), Deb Polderman ('10), and Dale Posthumus ('11).

The Portage Public School District is served by a seven-member Board of Education. The Board annually elects a President, a Vice-President, a Treasurer, and appoints a Secretary. The Board is responsible for selecting and appointing a Chief Executive Officer who serves as a Superintendent of Schools. The Board meets as a body to set or amend policy, develop educational goals, review and approve District budgets, and act on the recommendations of the Superintendent. The Board has establshed five committees to assist in its work of monitoring District operations: Executive Committee, Policy and Personnel, Curriculum and School Improvement, Finance, and Facilities and Technology.

The District

The District consists of 42.9 square miles, including the City of Portage, parts of Texas Township, Pavilion Township, and a small section of the City of Kalamazoo. We have 8 elementary schools, 3 middle schools, two high schools (both are International Baccalaureate schools), and the Community Education Center, featuring a community high school, Curious Kids Pre-School and Day Care, and Enriched for Life program of continuing education classes.
