WHY IS THE PORTAGE PUBLIC SCHOOLS DEVELOPING A MASTER PLAN?

In 2008, the voters in the Portage Public Schools approved a bond election to provide the financing for two new elementary schools, Twelfth Street and Lake Central, the Central and Northern High School projects, relocating the Administration/Technology Center, a new Transportation/Maintenance Center, and various other projects. These projects have been completed.

Most of the remaining elementary schools, middle schools, as well as sports facilities, are in need of renovation and/or replacement. Many of these buildings were constructed in the 1950’s and 1960’s and need to be updated or possibly replaced. An updated plan is needed to determine the next phase of building projects for the Portage Public Schools.

WHAT WILL THE PLAN INCLUDE?

The plan will likely include a recommendation for renovations or replacing elementary and middle schools. The plan will likely also address pools, stadiums and other Portage Public School facilities. What will be included in the plan will be determined by data that is being collected and community input.

WILL THERE BE AN OPPORTUNITY FOR COMMUNITY PARTICIPATION?

A Steering Committee has been formed that includes a representation from all of the schools and various community organizations.

There will be two Community Dialogues: Community Dialogue #1 on October 9, 2014 at Northern High School at 7:00pm and Community Dialogue #2 on November 20, 2014 at Central High School at 7:00pm. The Community Dialogue #1 “What do we need…” will focus on programs and services which impact the need for school facilities. Community Dialogue #2 “What should we do…” will focus on future facility options and costs.

There will also be on-line questionnaires where persons who are not able to attend the community dialogues will have the opportunity to participate.

WHO IS ON THE STEERING COMMITTEE?

To help guide the development of the plan, the Portage Public Schools has formed a steering committee which consists of approximately 40 persons. The committee is widely representative of parents, community members, students, business leaders, clergy, seniors, local governments, and staff. We asked area organizations to select representatives for the committee.

The role of the steering committee is to review data and to help guide the process for community input.

WHAT IS THE TIME-LINE FOR COMPLETING THE PLAN?

The plan should be completed by the end of December 2014 with the Board of Education reviewing and making final decisions in early 2015.

HOW MUCH WILL THE PLAN COST?

At this point, we don’t know the costs since no decisions have been made as to the exact projects that will be in the plan. The purpose of the developing the Master Plan is to make these determinations.

WILL THIS PLAN RESULT IN A BOND ELECTION?

It is likely that this will result in a bond issue. At this time, we don’t know when a bond request would be made or what the proposed amount would be.
