To our parents, guardians, and other community members,
In anticipation of the opening of a new elementary school
on 12th Street in Fall 2009, a committee of parents
representing all elementary & middle schools has worked with
school officials the last several months to develop a viable plan to
revise elementary attendance boundaries. In this
process, every attempt was made to maintain neighborhood
school groups, prevent overcrowding, minimize the numbers of
students moved, and minimize student time on buses.
Last spring, two options were presented to the community
for review and feedback. The committee working on the
boundaries has processed this feedback, and have finalized a
recommendation for the Board of Education. This
recommendation will be shared with the Board on Monday,
November 24th, at its regular meeting. The Board will
take final action to affirm the plan on December 15th.
In order to provide interested members of community time to
review the plan prior to the meeting, we've posted a summary of
the information via the links at the end of this page.
Individuals with questions or feedback may contact us directly
via the "Contact Us" link below. For the past several
months, many individuals have provided us with thoughts and
alternate ideas. We continue to share all comments with
the committee members and they continue to be invaluable in
guiding us through this process.
In the coming weeks we will be sharing with you information
regarding open houses and other transition-related activities
planned to welcome students and their families to their new
schools. For those interested, we'll also be sending out
letters regarding the process for applying to be grandfathered
at your existing school.
We know that the welfare of your child is of utmost
importance. Continuing to provide quality instruction and
support for all of our community’s children is important to us.
We value the trust you have placed in us in the past. We will
work closely with the affected families to address any concerns
or challenges they face. We all want the transition to a new
school to be an exciting, positive experience.
Kindest regards,
Marsha A. Wells Superintendent of Schools
