Physical Education Highlights
5th Grade Phys Ed Quarterly Report
November 2003
Dear 5th Grade Parents,
The following concepts have been covered with your child in physical education class during the first marking period:
• Aerobic fitness—being able to run or play for a long time without stopping. Students are encouraged to use the talk test or pacing chart to find the correct speed at which to move. The goal for students is to achieve a score by the end of the year that is in the healthy fitness zone on the Fitnessgram fitness test. Students are encouraged to participate in aerobic activities at least three days per week for a minimum of 30 minutes each time.
• Flexibility concepts—throughout the year, students will be introduced to a variety of stretches to improve flexibility
• Various activities to promote muscular strength and endurance. We will be striving to achieve healthy fitness zone scores on pushups and curlups.
• Instep kick—using proper form to kick a stationary ball with the instep (where the laces are) and hitting a goal approximately 35 feet away. Students also practiced dribbling and kicking at a goal.
• Foot dribbling using the inside, outside, and instep of the foot while moving in various directions. Students also attempted to maintain control while being defended.
• Lead up games to soccer that incorporate various soccer skills
• Football related concepts, with an emphasis on throwing and catching skills. These skills were then incorporated into activities that involved offensive and defensive strategies. Students also reviewed punting using correct form.
• Various locomotor movements including walking, galloping, skipping, hopping on one foot, jumping on two feet, sliding, and running
• Leaping with good form for distance, then attempting to leap hurdles
• Showing self-control by showing anger appropriately, cooperating, disagreeing without arguing, listening without interrupting, accepting outcomes, and receiving discipline if necessary
