Physical Education Highlights

2nd Grade Phys Ed Quarterly Report

November 2003

Dear 2nd Grade Parents,

The following concepts have been covered with your child in physical education class during the first marking period:

• Following directions by listening, asking questions, doing an activity, following a leader, using equipment correctly, and considering consequences of inappropriate use of equipment

• Proper use of space—understanding that in the gym we have personal space that belongs to us so that we can all participate safely

• Knowing various body parts and ways we use them (i.e. turning, twisting, bending, straightening, etc.)

• Aerobic fitness—being able to run or play for a long time without stopping. Thus far, we’ve attempted to fast walk or jog non-stop for four minutes. Our goal by the end of the year is nine minutes.

• Flexibility concepts—understanding that we want our muscles to be flexible like a rubber band so that we can participate in activities without getting injured. Students have learned the wall stretch, quad stretch, and the sit and lean stretch.

• Instep kick—using proper form to kick a ball with the instep (where the laces are)

• Foot dribbling using the inside, outside, and instep of the foot

• Proper form when lifting and carrying objects

• Various locomotor movements including walking, galloping, skipping, hopping on one foot, jumping on two feet, leaping, sliding, and running

• Moving in various pathways—straight, curved, and zig-zag

• Giving their best effort in activities by trying hard at new things, continuing to try hard even when things are difficult, paying attention to the task they’re involved in, and checking their work to see if they’ve accomplished the task

If you have any questions, please contact me here at school.

Sincerely,

Mike Getsinger
Physical Education Specialist
