Curriculum

The Houghton Mifflin Legacy of Literacy basal series along with children’s literature and non-fiction comprise our language arts program. We continue to implement a ‘hands on’ science program to more directly address the needs of our children in the area of science education. Our math program is in the process of review with emphasis on alignment with the national Teachers of Mathematics Standards. We use the University of Chicago Math Program in kindergarten through fifth grade. Teachers use a variety of instructional techniques such as: team teaching, thematic-integrated instruction, cooperative learning and process writing in order to provide our students with an exemplary educational program.

Central Elementary enjoys a high level of parent participation. A parent-teacher organization is active within the school, encouraging parents within the school community to take part in school activities and many parents volunteer for tasks both within the classroom and other areas related to the instructional program. Parent-teacher contact is emphasized as a way of increasing student performance. Last year 99 percent of Central Elementary parents attended scheduled conferences. Virtually every parent in the school is contacted on many occasions by teachers or the principal whenever there is positive news to report or in the case of remedial actions, which may take the cooperation of the parent and the school.
