Game Day 207

Science Fair 2007

Teachers Nancy Trotter (5th), Susan Kallewaard (4th) attended a workshop  a year and a half ago November, 2005, hosted by the Kalamazoo local section of the American Chemical Society (KACS), the Pfizer Foundation (PEI), and Kalamazoo Regional Educational Service Agency (K/RESA). This workshop was the catalyst to start the process of the Haverhill Science Fair 2006.  In 2007 Trotter and Kallewaard were joined by Erin Losik and decided to continue to work started last year and hosted the 2007 Haverhill Science Fair.

Along with the workshop donations of scientific materials, Pfizer provided much assistance.   The teachers were given regular help at each of the workshops and questions were quickly answered as they came up.

Teachers Mrs. Susan Kallewaard, Miss Erin Losik and Mrs. Nancy Trotter scheduled several after school workshop dates and a Saturday morning event.   Many of the students participated in several dates exploring their scientific questions with teachers and many volunteer Pfizer scientists.

Mrs. Trotter, fifth grade teacher and the other Science Fair Director responds with her thoughts about the overall process of a science fair with the students.  “I see this as a rewarding experience for our students, because they acted as scientists, and they chose the topic to research that interested them.  It was difficult for many of them to accept the experiment not working as planned, but our Pfizer scientists reassured the kids that unexpected results are very normal.  This has been an exciting and enjoyable process for those of us who have been involved in the various workshops.  We hope it has been fun and rewarding for each of our junior scientists.”

HOT and COLD experiments

We saw swans, ducks and muskrats. We also took part in a hands-on cattail exploration.

HAVERHILL AWARDS PRIZES FOR SUMMER LIBRARY!

Every time students visited Wonderful Wednesdays at Haverhill's summer library program, they got to enter their names in a drawing for Barnes and Noble gift cards. The drawing was held at an assembly, and one winner per grade level was chosen. Congratulations to our readers!
