Our 2015-2016 Lake Center Student Council meets once a
month before school, with Ms. Rosati and Mrs. Leverett providing support as
advisors. There are twenty-four members representing the 4th and 5th grades.
We enjoy spending these early mornings working on projects that benefit our
community and better our school.
Student Council is in charge of the School Store, which is open once a month
on Tuesdays and Thursdays. A 4th and 5th grade council member is assigned to
work the shifts, along with one advisor. Items sold at the school store
include pencils, erasers, rulers, pencil cases and many more school
supplies. Student Council members are in charge of dealing with money and
giving back the appropriate change to each customer. We also collect
recycling for the school every week!
During one of our earlier meetings we brainstormed
different types of Spirit Days to sponsor throughout the school year. As a
group, we are in charge of promoting these days with posters, announcements
and by participating each month. This year we have planned Neon Day,
Superhero Day, Lake Center Spirit Day, Slipper Day, Crazy Sock Day, Favorite
College Shirt Day, Crazy Hair Day, Stuffed Animal Day and Decades Day. For
our Crazy Sock Day we asked families to donate socks for a local shelter and
on Superhero Day we asked that each participant donates gloves to benefit a
local shelter. On Stuffed Animal Day we asked for cat and dog food for the
At our meeting in October we organized our campaign for
Red Ribbon Week. We helped spread the word of why being drug free is so
important! In December, Student Council members spent time making goodie
bags filled with trinkets for families in need. These bags were distributed
at the annual holiday dinner which is provided by the Blue Dolphin
restaurant downtown Kalamazoo.
This January, Student Council is organizing a Food Drive
for Lake Center Bible Church Food Pantry. Our goal is to beat our collection
from last year of 2,226 items and collect 2,500 items this year. Lake Center
families are always very generous with their support of the food drive!
For our February service project we are planning to
participate in Valentines for Veterans at the VA hospital in Battle Creek.
Every other year we organize a program called Pennies for Patients.
Donations are collected and given to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. On
the alternating years, we hold the Jump Rope for Heart fundraiser where
students are encouraged to jump rope and raise money for heart disease. This
year, Student Council will be assisting Mrs. Kitchen with the Jump Rope for
Heart fundraiser and it will run February 8th-12th.
We are very proud of all the hard work our Student
Council accomplishes and see wonderful students aspiring to be great
