Student Council
Our Lake Center Student Council meets once a month before school. There are fourteen members representing the 4 th and 5 th grades. We enjoy a breakfast snack together while working on our projects.
At our meeting in October we organized our "Hugs are Better than Drugs" campaign for Red Ribbon Week. We distributed giant white hearts with red ribbons for each class to decorate.
During one of our earlier meetings we brainstormed different type of Spirit Days to sponsor throughout the school year. We, as a group, are in charge of promoting these days with posters and announcements. So far, we have had a Jersey Day, Wacky Hair Day, Slipper Day, Sports Day and Lake Center Spirit Day.
In early November Student Council organized a Food Drive for PCOC. We collected over 5,000 food items to share with needy families locally. This number beat our previous years' contributions.
Student Council is in charge of the School Store, which is open every other week. A 4 th and 5 th grade council member is assigned to work the shifts, along with one advisor. It is hectic, but fun!
On October 18 th before school began Student Council members met at the north entrance of Lake Center to clean-up and pull weeds to prepare for mulch. Even though mulch was not put down due to the weather, Mr. Root was very appreciative for effort that will a benefit come spring.
In December Student Council sponsored an all-day visit to our school from Lt. Colonel Keir Knapp of the 172nd Fighter Squadron out of Battle Creek . He presented a Power Point presentation of what the troops are doing over in Iraq to help the people over there.
In addition to Lt. Colonel Knapp's visit, we as a school, wrote letters to the troops in Iraq to thank them for all they are doing over there and how grateful we are for their sacrifice. These letters were shipped via the local Reserve unit out of Battle Creek .
On March 2 nd Student Council members read a Dr. Seuss book to a class in the younger grades to Celebrate Dr. Seuss's birthday.
This year Student Council started a little earlier. Mr. Root advised us to sponsor Citizenship Day which was celebrated on September 17 th . As a group, we came up with ways to be a good Citizen. Activities and worksheets were passed out to the teachers. The week ended with the entire building saying the Pledge of Allegiance together.
In February Student Council members were asked to decorate placemats in the Valentine's Day theme for a local Veterans chapter.
In May at Lake Center the 4 th & 5 th grade students participate in the annual Track & Field Day. Student Council members will be assisting them with tie-dying the t-shirts that the students wear to differentiate the classes.
