Office Hours

The last day that the counseling office will be open for summer is Thursday, June 26th. We will be closed for summer vacation starting Friday, June 27th. The office will re-open on August 12th. A counselor will be available starting August 18th. Appointments to enroll new students will begin on August 25th and 26th. Please call Ruthie (after August 12th) at 323-5475 to make an enrollment appointment. Thank you.

Scheduling

Students received their 2008-2009 class schedules during the last week in May.  At this time, the only schedule changes that were permitted were those in which level changes were required (i.e.:  a class failure or poor performance) or a schedule was missing an hour because of a schedule conflict.  Due to the need to maintain the integrity of the new scheduling process, no other schedule changes were allowed.  This included teacher, lunch or seminar requests.

Please note that there should be NO schedule changes in the fall.  Students were given the opportunity in May to fix any class or hour conflicts.  Remember that classes will be balanced over the summer.  It is possible that a teacher change might be made in order to keep all classes as balanced as possible.  We can assure that the particular course/class will be kept the same; however, teacher changes are likely.  Again, we will be unable to return to the previous teacher/schedule if the class was balanced.

Although incoming freshmen should have received their schedules in the mail, please be advised that teacher changes may still be conducted due to unforeseen circumstances such as staff changes or scheduling of new students.  Please note that the integrity of the particular class will remain the same, the only thing to change may be teacher and hour in which the class is taught.

We appreciate your cooperation in this matter as we strive to maintain an optimal learning environment for all students by keeping class sizes to a minimum.  Thank you.

Senior News

Senior’s Final Transcripts

It is the student’s responsibility to make sure their final transcript is sent to the college they plan to attend in the fall.  A list will be posted in the counseling office with the college choice each student indicated on their “Senior Survey”.  Students, who did not answer this question or chose more than one college, will not have a final transcript sent out.  It is imperative that college bound seniors check this list to insure timely completion of their college admissions file.

Free Tutoring

NHS drop-in tutoring will begin within the first two weeks of school in the fall.  Tutoring will be after school every Tuesday and Thursday in the media center from 2:50 to 3:30 p.m.  Students will be able to receive help in all subject areas.   If you are unable to stay after school and would like to receive tutoring before school, see your counselor and we will try to arrange alternate hours.

A Note to Parents

The counselors would like to remind parents and students that we are here to advocate for the students and their needs.  We would like to encourage parents to:

  • contact the individual teachers first with concerns about assignments, grades or student progress.
  • ask teachers for specific feedback and to offer specific recommendations/suggestions for improving academic achievement in their classes.
  • contact counselors if grade concerns are not resolved.
  • seek additional help from teachers before or after school...consult teachers to make appointments
  • utilize the free "drop-in" tutoring service provided by NHS.
  • contact counselors if/when questions arise.
