The 1 st meeting is this Friday after school from 3:00 until 4:30.
Environmental Club
Did you know that one out of four of our medicines originates in the rainforest, yet less than 5% of rainforest plants have been tested for medicinal value? Forty percent of the world’s free oxygen comes from rainforests and only 4 percent of the remaining rainforests in the world are protected. For these reasons, the
Educational Community here at North Middle School has rallied behind the “Rescue the Rainforest” fundraiser sponsored by North Middle School’s Environmental Club. We have saved over 16 acres of the Osa Peninsula Rainforest in Costa Rica. By helping save acres of rainforest, North Middle School plays an integral role in our global community. North Middle School students have also been actively participating in collecting, sorting and recycling plastic and aluminum containers. Because of this team effort, an entire truck-load of recycling was saved from a trip to the landfill and taken to the recycling center. Other projects include researching more biofriendly alternatives to Styrofoam trays at lunch and educating the student body about environmental issues such as global warming and reduce, reuse and renew. The students were busy in April planting trees donated by the city of Portage and spreading mulch around the grounds to eliminate invasive weeds species! Stay tuned to see what is next for PNMS's Environmental Club.
