Creating Bibliography Entries

 

This information has been updated to reflect the changes made in MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers, 7th Edition. This will differ from previous style guides that may have been distributed.

Web Site

Use this format only if you have used multiple pages from a large site. If you are using a single page or article from a larger site, use the format for a single page below.

Bibliography Format

Author's name, last name first (if available). Web site title. Version number. Name of institution
  or company responsible for the site (if available), creation date (if available). Medium of publication. Date of access.

You no longer need to show the URL. If your teacher would like you to show the URL it should be placed in angled brackets after the date accessed. For example, <http://www.portageps.org/schools/middle/wms/media/mediacenter-cite.aspx>

Bibliography Example

Fisher, Bob. Bulfinch's Mythology, 27 May 2001. Web. 10 December 2009.


A Web Page
Including An Article From A Web Based Encyclopedia Or Other Work

Bibliography Format

Author's name, last name first (if available). "Web Page or Article Name." Web site title. Version number. Name of institution
  or company responsible for the site (if available), creation date (if available). Medium of publication. Date of access.

Bibliography Example

Beasley, Maurine H. "Roosevelt, Eleanor." World Book Kids. World Book, 2010. Web. 6 January 2010.


Online Periodical Database

Periodical (magazine) and newspaper citations are now formatted in the same manner as their corresponding print publications. The database name is appended at the end of the citation.

Bibliography Format

Author(s). "Title of Article." Title of Periodical Day Month Year: pages. Name of Database. Medium of publication. Date accessed.

Bibliographic Example

Davis, Lloyd Spencer, "A superlative penguin." Natural History 4 December 2001: 46. eLibrary.
  Web. 12 January 2010.


Print Encyclopedia

Bibliography format

Last name, First name (if given). "Title of Article." Title of Encyclopedia. Year. Medium of Publication.



Bibliography example

McGrath, William J. "Vienna." The World Book Encyclopedia. 2001. Print.

Encyclopedias no longer require the publisher information and, if the encyclopedia is organized in alphabetical order as most are, you do not need the volume and page numbers.


Book

Bibliography Format

Lastname, Firstname. Title of Book. Place of Publication: Publisher, Year of Publication. Medium of Publication.

Bibliography Example

Gordon, Karen Elizabeth. The Transitive Vampire: A Handbook of Grammar. New York:
   Cahill, 1985. Print.

For books with multiple authors, the first author is listed last name first. All other authors are listed by first name  last name. The name of the last author is preceded by "and."


Magazine Article

Bibliography Format

Author(s). "Title of Article." Title of Periodical Day Month Year: pages. Medium of publication.

Bibliography Example

Van Dyk, Jere. "The Long Journey of the Pacific Salmon." National Geographic July 1990: 3-37. Print.


Newspaper Article

Bibliography Format

Author(s). "Title of Article." Title of Periodical Day Month Year: pages. Medium of publication.

Bibliography Example

Andreoni, Phyllis. "Program Enrolls Elderly." Kalamazoo Gazette 4 July 1990: A9. Print.

If the newspaper name is not commonly known you can include the city name and state in square brackets between the periodical name and the date.
