Skyward Family Access

Parents and Guardians of Portage Students:

This school year, Portage Public Schools has implemented a new student information system, Skyward. Along with this implementation comes a replacement for our classic Parent Internet Viewer (PIV). This replacement, referred to as the 'Skyward Portal', will offer you the ability to view more information regarding your student than in the past, as well as serve as a vehicle for you to submit information to the schools such as changes of email addresses, phone numbers, emergency contacts, etc. What follows is list of frequently asked questions regarding the Skyward Portal.

How do I gain access to the Skyward Portal?
Skyward requires each parent wishing to access the Skyward Portal to have an active email address on file with the district. The best way to verify your email address is to check with one of the buildings your children attend. When the portal is activated, you will receive an email with a link to the portal where you can create a userID and password for your use.

What can I expect to access?

  • Beginning the week of September 8th, you will be able to access your children's attendance, schedules, emergency contacts, demographic data, and health information. You will be able to review the accuracy and submit corrections to the district via the portal. You will also be able to adjust your alert settings for messages the district sends directly to your phones.
  • Beginning the week of September 22nd, gradebook data (assignments and overall grades) will be made available for students enrolled in grade 6 and higher. You will also be able to sign up for email alerts related to grades.
  • Also beginning the week of September 22nd, you will be able to access an online directory of the other families attending your school(s) (addresses, phone numbers, and email addresses). (Note, via settings you choose in the portal, families have the option to opt out of these directories if they wish.)
  • By the second semester, access to academic records, including unofficial transcripts will be available.

    What about elementary access to assignments and grades?
    The elementary report card has undergone significant changes for the 14-15 school year, changes which are independent of the software change. We are still discussing the best way to utilize the Skyward Portal for academic progress monitoring at the elementary level. We expect to have more details available during marking period 2 of this year.

    What information should I supply the school district?
    As noted above, the Skyward portal will allow you to submit information to the district quickly and easily. Specifically, once you gain access you will want to check the following areas and update them accordingly:
  • Emergency Contacts - we did not convert emergency contacts from our old system - many of them were inaccurate and/or out of date. We ask that you add at least two current emergency contacts for each of your children.

  • Health Information - please review, and as needed, update the health information for your children.

  • Confirm Race/Ethnicity - you may be prompted to confirm the race/ethnicity of your children - this is required by state and federal regulations pertaining to the operation of public schools.

  • Directory Options - Portage Public Schools routinely provides directory information (which includes names, addresses, phone numbers, and email addresses) for student and their parents/guardians for use by non-school entities. Examples include gifted and talented programs, summer programs, military recruiters, higher education recruitment offices, parent teacher organizations, and other parents with children enrolled in the same schools as your children. If you wish your child or family to be excluded from these directories, you may change your preferences on the portal.

    You can get to all of these items by clicking on the Student Info button followed by the request changes link in the upper right hand portion of the portal window.

    What information regarding my children can I change?
    You can change just about everything. Some items, like phone numbers and email addresses, will update immediately. Other changes, such as home addresses and health information, will first be routed to the offices for verification.

    How do my children gain access?
    Your children have their own id's and passwords for the portal - never share yours with them, otherwise they will be able to change information you may not want them to. Once the portal is activated, student id's and passwords for Skyward are exactly the same as the id's and passwords they use to log onto our district computer network and related systems.
