A Message from the PN Parents Compass…..PNP Compass is collecting financial donations for staff appreciation events for the remainder of the year. If you would like to support the awesome PNHS staff via a donation, please go to our donations website and click on "Staff Appreciation Donation". All money given will go toward staff appreciation week and the end of the year luncheon. 

Important Reminders:

  • Seniors planning to attend KVCC in the fall of 2025 may sign up to participate in a trip to KVCC's New Student Orientation on May 1st from 9:30-1. Transportation and lunch will be provided.  Pick up a parent permission form from the Counseling Office and return it to the Counseling Office by the end of the day TODAY in order to secure a spot on this trip. Space is limited.

Coming Up This Week…

  • PN Drama: Join us TODAY after school to find out about the fall 25' musical. We will meet in the Choir Room TODAY @ 3:00. It will last about 10 minutes!

  • Michigan Youth in Government will be meeting Tuesday, April 29 to start our election season for our new co-delegation leaders. Be in Ms. Dixon's room 2.132, 2:50-3:30, to meet our candidates and see their campaign videos and be part of some Q & A!

  • Hey Seniors...Thursday, May 1st is Career and College Decision Day. To celebrate your decision, please wear your gear to school to show your career or college choice. If you wear something showing your future plans, stop by the Counseling Office before school to grab a sweet treat.

  • Crochet Club will meet Thursday, May 1, from 2:50-3:30 in a room 3.129.  All are welcome no prior knowledge needed.

  • Stop by Huskie Stadium on May 3 for the 20th Annual Matt Thrasher Memorial Challenge Day of Lacrosse!  On this day we play lacrosse and we honor the memory of Matt Thrasher # 88, who was a Portage Northern student who played on the PN/PC combined lacrosse team back in 2004.  Matt was the goalie and in the summer of 2004 Matt tragically died in a boating accident.   • Class of 2025 with 24 days until graduation, plans are well underway! One of those items is the choice of your class speakers. Auditions were last week and they have been chosen. Please congratulate Lizzy Rzepka and David Fuentes! We know they will do an excellent job and are proud to have them represent you at Miller Auditorium on Thursday, May 22. Keep your heads up and keep looking towards the goal line seniors, you're almost there!

  • Last week, the Northern Light staff competed in the Michigan Interscholastic Press Association state championship.   • Congratulations to the Science Olympiad team for their participation in the State Finals Tournament this Saturday at MSU.  Special congrats to Yuvan Muppireddy who placed 7th overall in the Helicopter event, and Will James and Aarav Choubey who placed 11th overall with their Electric Vehicle out of 54 high school teams.

  • The PNHS esports team attended the state finals tournament and had its best ever showing! Leading the way with a second consecutive state runner up finish was sophomore Zack Smith in Madden. The Call of Duty team, comprised of seniors Carter Allen, Levi Shaver, Jaykob Black, Xavier Osman, and Isaac Owens also brought home a state runner up finish. The Smash Bros. team had a banner day, taking on the state's best and holding their own with a 4th place team finish to go along with a top 10 individual finish by sophomore Andrew Trieu, and a top individual 6 placement by senior Elijah Williams with sophomore Blake Powell also making significant contributions. Other teams in action were the Rocket League duo of Joe Srackangast and Carter Allen as well as the Mario Kart super sisters duo of Monica and Jessica Mastin. It was a long day of competition but our Huskies showed great spirit throughout. Please congratulate them all on a job well done!

A Look Ahead…

  • JUNIORS, Class of 2026 - where are the artists, designers, meme-makers, and writers? to get a t-shirt design submitted to Ms. Dixon at adixon@portageps.org so the vote can be set up and we can then get an order form out to you before school ends. Get your drawing and/or photoshop skills moving and design something to inspire yourself or your class FUTURE SENIORS! Let's see what you've got! Submissions are due by Monday, May 5!

  • Boys Tennis:  All who intend to play boys tennis in the Fall, we will have a mandatory team meeting on Wednesday, May 28 @ 3:30pm at the PNHS tennis courts to discuss plans for the summer and Fall. Outgoing seniors are also encouraged to attend. Please RSVP to Coach Brian by 5/21 via email at bpersky@portageps.org.

  • PN Boys Soccer: The fall season is just around the corner.  With that being said, we need to start preparing for it.  We'll do this by building a strong foundation over the summer.  Summer training will begin June 16th.  All summer trainings will be Monday to Thursday, from 5:30pm to 7:00pm at Huskie Field.  Please contact Choward@portageps.org with any questions.

Create your class t-shirt and submit it to your senior class advisor, Ms. Dixon at adixon@portageps.org. Submissions are due by Monday, May 5 so you can vote on them between Friday, May 9-Friday, May 16. The winning designer receives a free class t-shirt!

  • PN Varsity Baseball defeated South Christian 14-9 last night. Braylon Rolfe picked up the victory for Huskies, giving up one hit and one run over three innings. Leo Rodriguez, Mateo Icaza, Austin Keene, and Dylan Smith picked up multiple hits for the Huskies. Game two was suspended due to darkness, but not before Brice Welke got Portage Northern on the board with a solo home run to left field. Your Huskies travel to Lakeshore Thursday for a conference matchup versus the Lancers.

  • Fishing club’s last meeting of the year will be May 13th at 3pm in the Library.  Join us with our guest speaker and other fun activities.

  • Staff, Students & Families… looking for fun volunteer opportunities??  The Southwest Michigan Miracle League chapter in Schoolcraft, Michigan is in need of volunteers this Saturday, May 3. The Miracle League is a nonprofit organization that provides a safe barrier free baseball field for all kids with unique abilities and disabilities to play baseball.  No experience necessary… And no prior knowledge of baseball necessary. Contact Ms. DiMaggio in the Counseling Office or email her for more information. Game times are at 10 AM, 11:30 AM and 1 PM.  Hope to hear from you!

A Message from the PN Parents Compass…..We are trying to make sure all 311 graduates walk away from the Senior Breakfast with a substantial prize. We’ve created a SignUpGenius packed with items (and gift cards) that recent grads - whether they are joining the workforce, entering the military, heading off to college or going to trade school - can use.  Please use the list as a jumping off point. If you know of an item that a graduate needs - please donate it!  We ask all donations be in the Main Office at PN by Friday, May 9. You may make a monetary donation online and we’ll do the shopping for you.   • JUNIORS - CLASS OF 2026...Your senior class t-shirt designs are due by Monday...but only 2 have been submitted! Get your creative minds working! Come up with a slogan! Rethink a meme! Bring some stick figures to life. Go to customink or canva or uberprints and bring your ideas to the computer and send them Ms. Dixon by Monday, May 5 at 3pm so your Senior Class has a design that won't be forgotten!

  • From the Sunshine Society Club:  Next week is MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS WEEK! Please wear green on MONDAY to show your support. Being part of a safe, positive community is vital for our mental health and wellbeing. We thrive when we have strong connections with other people and supportive communities that remind us we are not alone.

  • The 20th Annual Matt Thrasher Memorial Challenge Day of Lacrosse is happening May 3!  On this day we play lacrosse and we honor the memory of Matt Thrasher # 88, who was a Portage Northern student who played on the PN/PC combined lacrosse team back in 2004.  Matt was the goalie and in the summer of 2004 Matt tragically died in a boating accident. A Look Ahead…

  • AP Government test students...your test is on Monday - be sure to check the AP Exam Google Classroom and study for Tuesday's AP Test! See Dixon with any questions and good luck to you!

  • SAVE THE DATE!  On Sunday May 18 at 2 PM, the PN Huskie and PC Mustang baseball programs will be hosting the first annual PN/PC staff slow pitch softball game. We hope to make this a big community event and to make this an annual fundraising event for a different charity/organization every year.  This year we are supporting the Tuberous Sclerosis Alliance (TS Alliance). Hope to see you all at the Portage Northern Baseball Field!!

  • Fishing club’s last meeting of the year will be May 13th at 3pm in the Library.  Join us with our guest speaker and other fun activities.

  • Boys Tennis:  All who intend to play boys tennis in the Fall, we will have a mandatory team meeting on Wednesday, May 28 @ 3:30pm at the PNHS tennis courts to discuss plans for the summer and Fall. Outgoing seniors are also encouraged to attend. Please RSVP to Coach Brian by 5/21 via email at bpersky@portageps.org.

  • PN Boys Soccer: The fall season is just around the corner.  With that being said, we need to start preparing for it.  We'll do this by building a strong foundation over the summer.  Summer training will begin June 16th.  All summer trainings will be Monday to Thursday, from 5:30pm to 7:00pm at Huskie Field.  Please contact Choward@portageps.org with any questions.

Upcoming Fundraisers…

  • PNP Compass will also be hosting a fundraiser at the Kalamazoo Candle Company's Portage location - just in time for celebratory gifts, be it Mother's Day, Graduation or Father's Day!  Join us on Tuesday, May 6 from 11a.m. to 8 p.m. and do a little shopping. Be sure to print out the flyer - or show it on your phone - and tell them you are shopping with PNP Compass. It's a great way to do a little shopping for someone else - or yourself - and help out your school as well!
