The Portage North Middle School Choirs have a tradition of exceptional singing and artistic prowess. The choirs have performed at District Choral Festival since 2004 and qualified for State Choral Festival since 2009. Other performances include many concerts in Kalamazoo County and Southern Michigan. 2012 included the 7th and 8th Grade Mixed Chorus’ first performance at Cedar Point Theme Park in Sandusky, OH.

The Choir Program includes the 6th Grade Mixed Chorus, 7th Grade Mixed Chorus, 8th Grade Mixed Chorus, 7th and 8th Grade Women’s Ensemble, and the 6th Grade Select Choir. Annual performances include the Fall Choral Showcase, Winter Concert, Winter Caroling with the Orchestra, Future Huskie Collage with NHS Choirs, Pre-Festival Concert, District Choral Festival, State Choral Festival since 2010, Spring Pops Concert, Fine Arts Festival with all Related Arts classes, and the Eighth Grade Awards Ceremony and Celebration.

Emphasis is placed on the promotion of healthy singing, excellence in performance, music literacy, sight-singing including the use of solfège and Curwen hand signs, introductory knowledge of the piano keyboard, music composition, critical music listening skills, music mapping, and written expression. Teaching strategies and media will include vocal modeling, instructor and student lead instruction, small group cooperative learning, kinesthetics, student composition of word and music, keyboard modeling, audio recordings, video recordings, two and three-dimensional works of art, live performances, the appearance of guest musicians/artists, guest clinicians, attendance of Portage Northern High School performances and rehearsals during the school day when possible.
