Students won't learn in classrooms. They won't sit at stationary, hard desks.
Students at Haverhill and Central Elementary schools will learn in a reimagined school building -- where community connection is emphasized and flexibility is encouraged.
The new elementary schools, slated to open after two years of construction, for the 2025-26 school year are the Future of Elementary Learning at Portage Public Schools.
Classrooms are swapped out for learning studios where each grade level exists in shared spaces called communities and teachers collaboratively educate students. Seating options are flexible and soft, giving students choice over where and how they learn throughout their day.
Woodland Elementary will be the third elementary school to be rebuilt using this concept. The new Woodland is slated to open in 2027.
