The start of the 25-26 school year is very near!
As the District completes finishing touches on two brand new elementary schools – Central and Haverhill elementary, we have an important update for both existing and new families at our affected schools.
Due to the work of unpacking and organizing at the new schools, building secretaries will be housed in a temporary location beginning next week to assist current and new families with enrollment or general questions.
Please visit your child’s school newsfeed at portageps.org to see the details.

A partial calendar for the 2025-26 school year was approved by the Board of Education Monday, July 21.
A complete 2025-26 school year calendar is not yet available due to ongoing contract negotiations with the Portage Education Association. The partial calendar covers August and September, and the District will also follow the Kalamazoo RESA Common Calendar for major school holiday breaks.
A monthly District calendar will be established and affirmed by the Board until a complete school year calendar is approved between the Board and the PEA. You can view the School Year Calendar at portageps.org/o/pps/page/school-year-calendar.

We are so proud of the 80 students who joined us this summer for our English Learner elementary summer program.
The goal of the program is to practice reading, speaking, writing and listening in fun, interactive ways.
We also want to thank the six high school students who helped as mentors, four of whom are EL students themselves.

The Summer Learning Student Showcase was a success for both elementary and middle school students. At elementary level, students chose their own recipes and cooked their own food for a tasting with their families. From smoothies, salsa, tacos, and more, the students showed off some impressive chef skills! 🌮🥪🍓
At the middle school level, summer learning came to a close with the presentations from students on sustainability and their very own podcasts on a topic of their choosing. Students argued the pros and cons on a variety of topics including universal healthcare and cellphones in schools.
Great job, summer learners! 🥳👏

Thank you to the pediatric dietitians from Bronson who met with our students at Summer Learning to teach them about the power of a balanced diet. 🍎🥖 Students learned about the macro nutrients that fuel their bodies such as protein to help them run and jump and carbohydrates that give them energy. 🥪🥗🍿
