a group of students and adults pose for a photo with a check

The annual Breadlift Fundraiser is back, just in time for Thanksgiving dinner.

Portage Northern (PN) students will be knocking on doors on Saturday, Nov. 22, between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. as part of the annual Breadlift Fundraiser.

Held on the Saturday before Thanksgiving, students walk through Portage neighborhoods  collecting donations for a student-selected charity in exchange for a loaf of bread. (to be used for Thanksgiving stuffing).

The first Breadlift was held in 1966 and raised $325. Over the years the event has grown, breaking an annual record of $30,129.87 for pediatric heart transplants at C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital. This year proceeds will benefit Bronson Hospital’s Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Fund to help families with children living with cancer or other rare blood disorders.

You don’t have to wait until Nov. 22 to help. If you would like to support PN students’ efforts, you can donate in advance by writing a check to Portage Public Schools with the word “Breadlift” in the memo. Please mail your donation to Portage Northern High School, 1000 Idaho St. Portage, MI 49024 or donate online here.
