Update 5/12/25 : Candidate Scott Warstler has withdrawn his name from consideration for personal reasons. As a result, the interview on Wednesday, May 14 will begin at 6:30pm. Thursday, May 15 interviews will proceed as scheduled.
The Board of Trustees has selected 4 candidates to invite to first round interviews to be the next Superintendent of Portage Public Schools. Twelve (12) educators submitted applications for the position. Applicants' experience included current and former superintendents, assistant superintendents, central office administrators and principals. The Board completed a thorough review of the applications at a special meeting on May 7, 2025.
The interviews will be held on Wednesday, May 14 and Thursday, May 15. Interviews will take place at Portage Central High School’s Community Room, located at 8135 S. Westnedge, Portage, MI 49002 The public is invited to attend. The interviews will be recorded for release following the first round interviews on the Portage Public Schools YouTube Channel.
The interview schedule is as follows:
Wednesday, May 14 - 5:00 pm: Scott Warstler, Chief Operations Officer, Frisco Independent School District (TX)
6:30 pm: Matt Olson, Assistant Superintendent, Northwest Education Services
Thursday, May 15 -
4:30 pm: Eric Alburtus, Principal, Portage Central High School, Portage Public Schools
6:00 pm: Johnny Edwards, Assistant Superintendent, Portage Public Schools
Board President, Randy Van Antwerp said, “We are pleased with all the candidates interested in becoming the next leader for Portage Public Schools. The candidates selected tonight have the qualities and experience to potentially be an excellent fit for our school district and community. We are excited to learn more about the candidates’ abilities and attributes as well as what each candidate has to offer our students, staff, parents, and community.” Additionally Van Antwerp said, “The Board appreciates the feedback and participation in our online survey, and forums to help us identify the qualities and experience required and expected in the next superintendent.”
Current Superintendent Mark Bielang is retiring at the end of the school year. The Board plans to have a new Superintendent in place by July 1. The process has been facilitated by the Michigan Leadership Institute.
