Looking to opt out of the WIN Works state test in the spring?

For the first time, the state of Michigan is providing waivers for all juniors and their families to opt out of the spring work-skills test. So if you would like to take that test, great – you don’t need to do anything at all.

However, if you as a junior and your family, would like to waive that requirement, just follow these steps:

  1. Fill out this PDF waiver form.

  2. Save it to your computer or Google Drive.

  3. Email a copy to me at this address:  ealburtus@portageps.org

    1. If you are having trouble with that, you can…

      1. Print it

      2. Fill out the fields by hand

      3. Take a picture and email it my way

And you are done! Thanks for giving this thought and making the right choice for you.

  • (Too, it would be great if I knew what was best for you by, say, December 1. That gives us time to take on our responsibilities on all of this.)

  • Just as a reminder, the SAT/Michigan Merit Exam this spring is still required by the state of Michigan and is a PPS graduation requirement.

College-application deadline rapidly approaching

There are several colleges with a November 1st deadline. It is helpful to discuss application deadlines with your family. Seniors, if you are utilizing the Common Application to apply for college, invite your counselor on the Common App now. Be sure to use the correct email address for your counselor.  It takes time for the invitation to be sent to the counselors and then they need time to complete their pieces of the application before the deadline.

Don't forget about AP and IB Testing!

All students planning on taking an AP test this spring need to register and submit payment through portagecentralexams.com. While IB diploma candidates have already registered for their tests with Ms. Kubinski, all other IB students planning on taking one or more IB test in the spring also need to register and submit payment through portagecentralexams.com. Registration will close on October 30, 2026.

This week’s update on the

Just a reminder…

New work-permit process for Michigan teens

Families of students who are working or planning to begin a job should be aware of a new statewide process for youth work permits. Beginning October 2, 2026, Michigan schools will no longer issue youth employment permits. Instead, students and employers will complete the process online through the State of Michigan’s new Youth Employment Permit Portal (YEPP).

For more information about the new process, you can read the State of Michigan’s full announcement here:
