I am Tony Moon, the athletic director for Portage West. I wanted to extend a huge thank you to all the Portage West families who have already begun the Final Forms process . As we approach the beginning of middle school athletics for the 2026-2027 school year, a few reminders for you. We begin Middle school practices August 17th . Volleyball tryouts start that week and Cross country and Football begin their practices for the season. We do recognize that families are still on vacation and I encourage you to contact your sport specific coach and alert them to this and get any pertinent information you may need .
In regards to final forms, please keep in mind that Incoming 6th graders do not have Chromebook access to update their portion of signing forms, when we begin sports practice on the week of August 17th, we will have Chromebook’s available for them to finalize their forms and be “all green” to practice .
In regards to Athletic physicals, please remember that student athletes cannot participate in any practice or tryout unless that have a valid athletic physical that has been reviewed and cleared by the athletic department. That does take time.Please do not wait until the week that practice's begin. It does take time to review each athletic physical and input the information into Final Forms. Right now we have reviewed over 130 physicals and we will have more done in the following weeks. Please make sure to upload the athletic physical as either an image or a pdf. Anything else does not play well with our system and we cannot open it to review and clear it until you upload it as an image or a PDF.
Please remember that MHSSA rules require a valid athletic physical to participate in any sport. That means to practice or to even tryout . Without one, your student athlete cannot participate . There is no negotiation . It is a state rule and district policy.if you still need an athletic physical please go to the Portage schools athletic physical on Monday, August 3rd, at Portage Northern. The cost is only $35. Information is attached. If that does not work for you, and your regular doctor cannot get a physical done before practices begin, then please check out Well Now on Westnedge and Milham. They do walk ins.
