It may be chilly outside, but the students at Angling Road Elementary are on fire for learning!

Another great student spotlight!
The Mustang Mentor program currently has over 75 students from Portage Central High coming to Portage Central Middle to volunteer their time mentoring their peers. These mentors are helping with homework, organizational skills, communication, and being great role models for our rising Mustangs. Great job!

There is a special Schools of Choice window for 2nd semester open now through Dec. 23, for students to enroll at North Middle School (grades 6,8) and Northern High School (grades 9-12).
Visit https://www.portageps.org/o/pps/page/schools-of-choice to apply.

Our Portage Central and Portage Northern high school students are partnering this week to collect diapers for those in need. Donations can be dropped off this week at either high school or at the rivalry basketball games Thursday and Friday.
Great job, Mustangs and Huskies!

Hobbs is 5 years old! The Portage Northern High School comfort dog celebrated his birthday today with selfies with students and staff. As part of his birthday celebration, Huskies raised money for Paws with a Cause, the organization that matched the school with Hobbs.

The anatomy lesson at Portage Community High School this week involved students dissecting cow hearts. Ms. Adriance led the class through dissecting and labeling parts of the hearts in her science classroom.
Did you do anything like this in high school?

At West Middle School, Mr. Messenger and Mr. Bailey have been presenting a "Take Care of Each Other" lesson to every class in the building.
The lesson emphasizes the importance of being kind, reviews the negative impact that offensive language and racial slurs have had on the school community, discusses what to do when/if these types of words/phrases are heard or being used, and encourages the students to commit to taking care of each other.
The Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports motto for Portage West is "The West Way" which asks students to 1) Take Care of Yourself, 2) Take Care of Each Other, and 3) Take Care of This Place.

Happy Thanksgiving! If you're a Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade fan, you'll appreciate the homemade "parade" made by 3rd-5th graders last week at Lake Center Elementary.
The students learned about the history of the annual parade and made their own balloons to line their hallway.

Students at Portage Community High School are Greek champions! The students learned about Greece and Rome by playing their own Greek Olympic Games Wednesday, including standing jump, discus throw and hoop rolling.
Students also constructed a Lego Roman Colosseum that was 1,756 pieces, and had a taste test of Roman vs. Greek cheesecakes.

Nicholas Crocker, a children's book illustrator, former WMS Pioneer, and a custodian at North Middle School, visited our middle schoolers this week to talk drawing and painting.
Thank you, Nicholas, for sharing your time and talent! 👏👏

Reminder, there is no school Wednesday through Friday for Thanksgiving. Enjoy the break!

Last week, the Woodland Elementary library collaborated with the Portage District Library to bring beginning coding skills to Mrs. Fryer's kindergarten class using STEAM Learning Robots.
Each small group of kindergarten students was partnered with a 5th grade student. The students had to use the color squares to code the robot to perform specific maneuvers and make it through the path they built for it.
The 5th grade students were there to help support and strengthen the WOD community by being mentors to the younger students. Great job, Woodland!

Fridays are fun at Portage Northern High! Staff put out games to send their Huskies into the weekend on a positive note and encourage students to be present and interact with others around them.
The birds are singing, the sun is shining and it's a great day to be a huskie!

Today is National Substitute Educator Day!
Throughout the District, there are more than 350 substitutes who cover classrooms and help students continue learning, even when teachers are away.
