Today is Martin Luther King Jr. Day! Did you know, establishing a day to honor the Civil Rights leader took 15 years of advocating and grassroots effort?

The legislation to recognize Martin Luther King Jr. Day was first introduced just four days after his assassination on April 4, 1968, but it faced significant opposition and was ultimately stalled. It would take 15 years of persistence by civil rights activists for the holiday to be approved by the federal government and an additional 17 years for it to be recognized in all 50 states. Today, it's the only federal holiday designated as a national day of service to encourage all Americans to volunteer and improve their communities.

You can read more about the history of MLK Day from the National Museum of African American History & Culture. https://nmaahc.si.edu/explore/stories/15-year-battle-martin-luther-king-jr-day

Students took the drivers seat this week while drafting a vision for a new Angling Road Elementary.

Architects and designers from Fielding International and TowerPinkster who are in charge of creating the new school spent the day hearing directly from students on what would make a great new learning space. The students shared with the project leaders about what they hoped to see in a new school as well as what they love about their current building.

Superintendent Johnny Edwards is in his fourth year of mentoring African American boys at Portage Northern High School. Despite the more demanding schedule of his new role, Edwards said keeping up with his mentees is a top priority for him. Last month, the superintendent invited guest speaker Tinashe Chaponda, who was one Edwards' students during his time as a high school principal.
