West Middle School

Last Monday, May 11th, our girls leadership lunch group went on a field trip with group sponsor, Portage City Councilwoman Jihan Young, and other Portage West teachers to Western Michigan University. The girls were introduced to a college environment in an engaging and age-appropriate way. They explored different areas of campus, received a dorm tour, learned about classes and extracurricular activities, and got a glimpse of what daily college life looks like.

They were also able to experience campus dining and their wide variety of options! Thank you Mrs. Young for planning this activity for the girls and thank you to the teachers that chaperoned. Way to represent The West Way at Western!

Our Portage West Leadership Class students will end their fundraiser for the SPCA this Friday! This fundraiser was organized and ran 100% my students under the guidance of Mrs. Tomlinson. Last Friday, an amazing group of Pioneers brought the donations collected throughout the week from Portage West to the Portage Community Center.

Our donations have filled the shelves with enough food and personal care items that should last throughout the summer! The students learned how the center works and that their donations will feed and help thousands of people throughout Kalamazoo County.

It was all possible thanks to the generosity of our Portage West community, our staff, parent drivers, and help from both the kitchen and custodial staff. Our students were efficient, polite, curious, and caring - all things that we hope to teach every single day here at West.

Tuesday, May 5th our William Short Jazz/Rock Ensemble hosted a Spring concert in the Little Theater of Portage West. It was a packed house!

There are 2 days left in the 2026 "Unless We Care" Drive!

Some of the items that are needed are canned meat (chicken, tuna, beef, salmon), pasta (rotini, penne, etc), deodorant, body wash, textured haircare products, and more. See the attached flyer for a complete list!

Let's make this donation to the Portage Community Center the biggest yet from West Middle School!

And I know students would love to win the pancake breakfast cooked by Mr. Bailey & Mr. Messenger while watching "The Lorax"! Represent 1st hour classes!

You have until Friday. Families, you are able to bring donations to the main office if your student doesn't bring it to school in the morning.

Next week is the 2026 "Unless We Care" Food & Personal Care Items Drive!

May 4th - 8th.

Donations will be accepted in the 200 hallway before school all week and outside the Jazz Band Concert on Tuesday, May 5th.

1st Hour classes will be competing against each other for the chance to watch "The Lorax" as Mr. Bailey and Mr. Messenger make pancakes for the winning class!
