Today our 6th grade students participated in a gallery walk where they took a look at each other's ELA Purpose Projects. Each student selected a form of art that connected with their purpose and made original creations. Each art piece was accompanied by a paragraph that described their art work's purpose. The students did an amazing job with their art work and a phenomenal job with their paragraphs.

Congratulations to our 7th grade band, 8th grade band, and 8th grade orchestra on an outstanding performance at the MSBOA Band & Orchestra Festival last week.

All three groups earned Division One (superior) ratings from their concert and sightreading adjudicators. Each group received A's in 19 of a possible 20 categories.

Best of all, in the words of Mr. Kozian, "the kids represented our school the right way. They rock!" That's what The West Way is all about!

Today, all of our 8th graders heard from Mert Atilhan, a Professor at Western Michigan University in their Chemical and Paper Engineering Department. All 8th grade ELA classes are currently engaged in content that discusses climate change. Prof. Atilhan, a parent of 2 Pioneers, came to discuss the work that is happening in his department in regards to climate change.

He offered the opportunity to connect with students if they were interested in coming to the lab on campus to see the work in person. Thank you for taking the time today Prof. Atilhan! Fascinating presentation.

Portage Elementary Students are invited to create a “Birthday Card to America” for a chance to win a United States flag that has flown over the U.S. Capitol Building or the Michigan State Capitol. Pick up a card to design at your elementary school and return it by April 17th. Art work will be displayed at Portage City Hall from May 13 - Jul 10, 2026. Six prizes will be awarded.

Throwback Thursday! Last week, our 6th graders engaged in a fantastic joint activity between Kalamazoo RESA and the Air Zoo. The KRESA Mobile Lab had an interactive experience that was aligned with a "Mission to Mars" activity done in the classroom by the Air Zoo.
